Armistice Day November 11, 1918 was the original Veterans Day. I offer this babbling to those who didn't return; I can only write this with reverence because while a Veteran l wasn't combat arms.
WW I was the war to end all wars. The carnage was great. In the battles of the Somme and Ver Dunn a million men, total both sides in each battle were killed and no ground was gained or lost. The men stood in their trenches waiting for whistle to blow and when it did they came up out of the trench and charged. The other side heard the whistle and many of the chargers were killed instantly and fell back into the trench. Half the seed of Europe were killed.
The war took the UK to brink of bankruptcy. The ceasefire agreement was devastating to the German economy and created nationwide unrest.
The guns fell silent on the eleventh hour on Nov. 11, 1918.
Thanks for the reminder. Three uncles served in that war. Only 2 came home and they had gas injuries the rest of their lives. Marg, 1969 Army Volunteer
