I'm fully aware of terminology taking some time to become mainstream however there are community "terms" that appear to be disappearing from the general conversation and some that quite frankly should never have been introduced. And don't get me wrong some of us or other sectors of the general population have very strong feelings about these.

So my pet peeves:-

* Transsexual - an old outdated term

* Transsexualism - see above and IMO should never be used

* CIS - growing resentment from the natal female population

* Tranny - derogatory

What do you think. and have I missed any?

@mistressb

I don't understand the resentment people have for being called "CIS" as it isn't a slur or anything bad. Unless they want to change it to Homogender? Though I think it's because they don't really understand.

Anything tranny related should have been done and dusted long ago. Also, it would be nice if people put the same angst into sexual discrimination and wage inequality that they often apply to CIS.

In the intersex community the "H" word is considered a major slur and should never be used.  It is outdated and inaccurate yet persists in the world.  If you hear of someone using the word hermaphrodite to describe us please mention it is quite offensive to us, shows ignorance and the words intersex, intersex person or intersex folks should be substituted.  Thanks for this question.     Marg

@margprodue it is now, however in Medical school, quite a few years back, it was the excepted medical terminology.

I know.  I still hear it too frequently but keep working to change the public use of that word.   Thanks,  Marg

@margprodue

Good luck!

I'm trying to get people to use intersex instead as well, I'm starting with friends and family and building up to other people.

Hey Lir,  Good for you. Our paths may cross sometime on the Egale Canada intersex site.  Safe Journey,  Marg

In a perfect world all labels would be wiped away. The “need” to refer to someone in one manner or another shows (at least to me) a certain level of, to but it mildly, dislike. Living as I am, hidden in plain site, I hear slurs daily. Most times I try to mitigate their ignorance. Sometimes I choose to ignore it altogether, considering the source it comes from. Hugs, Katie
