READER:
Retiring? Wait! What? That doesn't look right. WTF Emily! Who the hell is this Liz K person? Did someone hijack your account? Is staff messing with you again?

ME:
Nope. Nothing like that Hon. I'm retiring Emily Alt. She had a good run but she's not me. She'll be a fond memory of when I was still figuring stuff out.

Most of you know I'm trans. Well into transition. Lots of things happen when you transition. One of them is a legal name and gender change. That's happening. I got the court order last week.

My legal name is Elizabeth. You can call me Liz. And no, I won't tell y'all my last name. I don't want trolls showing up on my doorstep. Liz K will do.

READER:
But why not keep Emily Alt? That's who you've been for so many years.

ME:
Good question. 'Emily Alt' was a name I chose long ago when establishing my online identity. Back then, I identified as a CD and never thought of it as a potential legal name. Once I understood that I was trans, it became clear that I needed a new legal name. I got serious about it early this year.

Although I'm fond of 'Emily Alt', it's not the name I wish to legally bear for the rest of my life. In essence, it has always been just a screen name for me.

There is one place you'll continue seeing 'Emily Alt'. My username. That can't be changed. And I'm not dumping 5 years of memories for a new username.

READER:
Oh.

ME:
I invite y'all to start using 'Liz'. It's okay if you forget. I hope you like my new name!

Liz

Thank you Jill!  I've been here a while but the name change makes me look new.  Plus I'm not around a real lot.  I spend more time moderating our sister site CDH.  In any event, I'm glad you like my new name!

@emilyalt OMG!!! Hi Liz, I love it!!! I hope to start the process of name change soon also. Once you know, YOU KNOW! Anyway, I’m proud of you and you have been an inspiration in my finding myself.

Love,

June ❤️

Thank you so much June!

The name change was well over-due.  I procrastinated over a year before getting serious about it in January.  Even then, it took a few months to settle on a name.  It's a big step that will have a cascading effect on every aspect of my life.  I'm now working on all my legal IDs, bank accounts, etc.  Definitely a process.  All the work is worth it.  I already feel much better.  My dead name was a source of constant dysphoria.

So you are looking at transition yourself?  Congratulations!

@emilyalt Funny thing is that I have always assumed that your last name was your last name. Just outside of Toledo, my home town, there used to be a car dealership owned by the Alt family.

Who Knew?

Way back when I chose that name it was a bit of a struggle.  The surname especially.  At the time I was thinking of an alternative to my legal surname.  That's when I realized 'Alt' served that purpose well.  A few days later I remembered Carol Alt, the famous supermodel.  If there'd been an Alt family car dealership where I lived I doubt I would've chosen that name.

I still think it's a good name.  But it's the right name for my situation.

I'm happy for you Liz. It's a magical moment when you legally become the new woman or new man that you are.

Hi Julie!  Hope you're doing well.  Been a while since I've seen you.  I agree.  It was a magical moment reading the court notice of approval!  Should've done it sooner.

@emilyalt I've been doing good, got my eyebrows threaded for the first time and dealing with temporary obstacles. My own journey is taking time. So hearing or seeing progress of others is nice. In life we are always moving.

Hey good for you Julie!  Getting your brows styled is a big step.  I can change how people see you.  I agree the journey we take is long and slow.  Some of the things I'm just getting to could've been done a year ago.  But it hasn't been idle time.  I'm still moving.
