Sparked by Michelle Larsen's new lyrics post:
What was your first record/song that woke you up to being...a bit different?
Mine was Lola by the Kinks, I bought it in a secondhand record shop, I was 15yrs old. I listened and listened to the lyrics of the song over and over...it felt haunting but my mind raced. This was transexual...though I didn't know that word...gay I think I thought. Had, and still does have a big effect on me when I hear it.
What do others have as their 'awakening song'? Or at least stirrings.
George Benson's version of "On Broadway". It's not really about an LGBTQA theme exactly, but it is about fighting to find your place in the world no matter how tough it is.
I guess the last stanza "...and I won't quit 'til I'm a star!". I suppose deep down I felt like Brielle wouldn't stop until people knew who she was, too! Only took me another 40 years to get here, but at least I'm here now!
First? I'd have no clue. I started hearing them when I was still in deep denial. Lola, Take a Walk on the Wild Side, Rebel Rebel, Dude Looks Like a Lady, and As Girls Go all have a calling to me.
