Gender is a social construct. I many cases, it is aligned with the assigned sex at birth. However, for transgender people, it is NOT aligned with the sex assigned at birth. Mental health issues come into play when people are not allowed to be their true selves or are denied the support that they need. This parallels the experience of gays and lesbians.
The notion that being gay, lesbian or trans is a “choice” is BS. The proof is that praying the gay away doesn’t work. It creates its own set of mental health issues because people eventually realize that you can’t change something that is innate to your being…
All humans have mental health issues...just like all humans have physical health issues. There are no examples of humans without mental health issues.
Agitation and anxiety are common to most. Those that don't experience these are people that do not feel anything... sociopaths, certain spectral disorders, and other examples of mental health issues.
Is saddens me that the shibboleth that gender can be taught or proselytized is still so prevalent. I recently had a conversation with a seemingly perfectly reasonable and educated person, during which she objected to her daughter “being forced” to wear pride colors for school. That her daughter was being “indoctrinated” into a lifestyle. I was horrified. I tried to explain to her there was no forcing of anything, that the only intention of pride day was to teach tolerance, and to fight prejudice… what children SHOULD be taught at a young age. She didn’t get it… her religion teaches that we are an abomination. So so sad… we have lots of work to do for sure.
Correction: I would be more accurate to say the gender you are aligned with. People like gov of Fla do not understand that children know at very young ages who they are.. and no amount of social moralizing or hand wringing will change that. The travesty is that those kids need validation to avoid social isolation, and to develop a positive self image, are being ostracized and abandoned by a new generation.
