I've been trying to use coloured and clear polish on my nails but I find that it seems to make them crumble quite badly. Granted, I use low-cost polish but I don't think that more expensive brands are necessarily easier on keratin. I use only acetone-free polish remover made from ethyl acetate and isopropyl alcohol. Can someone advise me? Perhaps my nails are simply unsuited to being painted; after all, it is apparently the same basic substance as is used to paint cars.

I think the comparison of nail polishes to automotive paint is a bit wide of the mark. While there may be some similarities, the operating conditions are vastly different. That means that the formulation would be very different. Cars are exposed to a broader range of temperatures, ultraviolet light and sheet metal expands in heat much more than the human body does and doesn’t care about toxicity (in contrast to human tissue). I have no specific idea what causes your particular set of issues, but some searches turned up some interesting information…

I have never tried UV cure gel polishes, but I have tried gels with chemical hardeners. However, what turned me off was having to soak my nails in acetone. That didn’t seem like a very good idea at all.

Perhaps you might seek the advice and counsel of a dermatologist…

I know some may not be able to afford it. But I leave it to the professionals. It would take me hours because I am a perfectionist. Just had a French gel manicure done today and white toes gel pedicure also. Took me about a month to get the nerve up but I finally did it.
