I've finally taken the plunge and applied for a name change. I am working with a pro bono lawyer who is also a trans woman. We have just today sent in the first phase of my name change. She acted as my notary and stamped the application. I went to the RCMP office and had my fingerprints taken. Long story short, it is now off to the government agency that grants said requests. Hopefully, it will be done by the end of January and the name change will be complete. However, it will not change my sex designation even though I'll have the name. To change the sex designation I have to send in an application to another province. Even though I live in BC, I was born in Ontario and have to apply there to have my birth certificate changed to reflect my gender. Then when that gets returned I can have my DL changed, medical changed, passport, etc, etc. Quite the process.
Yes, it is a process. I think the thing to remember is that all of those documents came into play over a number of years and, for example, the Birth Certificate was was all transparent to you. Now, the changes to all of the documents will all happen in a relatively short period of time. I think that’s why it feels like it is a complicated, convoluted process.

well here is where i get to rant! in iowa it costs and costs to get a name change! getting a gender designation change is ... well ya gotta get surgery in my case. i need a birth certificate change from florida and they require surgery. i don't want surgery!!
luckily the bank changed my name status to include my fem name after i told them my life might depend on it! now i don't get deadnamed at the grocery store!
i am hoping biden might find a way to simplify all this nonsense! we really do need a across the board law for all states on id. would make sense as id is troublesome from state to state anyway.

Living in New Zealand is a whole lot easier though still a lot of work. It costs $34nz and it comes with a change of desired gender or you can simply put ‘x’.
Changing sex is free of charge but you have to provide proof of change from docs and pyscs.
After that... passports, banks, online, new email addresses, contracts ad infinitum...
I actually filled out my first application as Polly yesterday! What a fab feeling!
