First time finding out I am intersexed was tough at first.I was 12 at the time when my parents finally told me.I remember them telling me they had something to tell me.Dad was sitting on the couch and mom was sitting in the recliner.I was about to go to my room and said they had to tell me.Looked at me and said I am intersexed.I was hit hard after being told at first.Parents did find help for me and learned well to cope with this.Went to see a specialist, everything changed.Specialist said I am biologically female also finding out I have the inner female reproductive parts.Decision was tough, let the estrogen take over after that.I learned well not to let this hold me back

Being intersex is an interesting situation in that the condition may be visible or it may not be. Visibly, differences in genitalia may be obvious but the condition may also exist only at the chromosomal level. There is also the issue of how gender identity comes into play. Fortunately we seem to be slowly moving away from the time when doctors and parents felt that they needed to intervene very early in the life of a child.

What is the best way to ask an Intersex individual about their pronouns/identifiers without disrespecting them?

Interesting Factoid:

Intersex people outnumber trans people almost 3:1 (1.6% versus .6%).

Same as anyone else: Just Ask assuming it isn’t clear by some indicator (their name, how they refer to themselves, etc.). If they don’t understand that you are trying to be respectful, it isn’t your problem.

”What pronouns would you prefer that I use?”

Personally, I really don’t like it when people feel that they have preface a question, such as:

”Can I ask you something personal?”

β€œI have a question, but it’s OK if you don’t want to answer.”

GEEZ, just ask the freaking question already!?!?
