You’ve made an important discovery. As trans people, the problem isn’t our gender identity. It has to do with the society that surrounds us. We’ve been given a lot of BS messages and unfortunately, we have believed them. Initially the messages came from parents, teachers, etc.; basically people in positions of authority with respect to us. They didn’t have to tell us directly, although that sometimes happens. Children are great at sensing what is OK and what isn’t. Hearing people disparage those who are different, for any number of reasons, sends a very powerful message. Some are successful at stealth and some are not. Either way, it creates a lot of pressure, tension, guilt, self-loathing, depression and many other bad things. Many people think, erroneously, that we are unstable to begin with, but that isn’t the case at all. If we can live as we need to, the storm clouds part and the sunshine is revealed.
Have you done a search for any transgender resources in your area? When things closed up, many organizations started doing their support groups and social gatherings online. This continues in a number of places as it is a good way to address lack of transportation, transportation costs and the time it takes up. It isn’t a universal solution, but it does help in certain situations. Anyway, it is very important for people to know that they are part of a community and that they are not alone.
