DR. HITTER earned her Master’s in Counseling from San Diego State University in 2007 and her Ph.D in Counseling Psychology from New Mexico State in 2012. She completed her doctoral internship with Iowa State University’s Student Counseling Service and worked as a staff psychologist for Idaho State University’s Student Counseling Service. Dr. Hitter has been an assistant professor with NMSU’s Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology since 2013. Her research includes a focus on counselor training and supervision, sexual trauma, and sexuality. Her clinical interests include working with LGBTQ+ individuals, sexual trauma survivors, and grief and loss. She uses an interpersonal approach in her clinical work, focusing on the relationship with the client as well as systemic factors that influence client concerns. She incorporates approaches such as mindfulness, stress management, and narrative therapy to help clients work toward their goals.Â
